INDIANAPOLIS — Barnes & Thornburg announced today that healthcare and public finance partners M. Elizabeth Walker and Jerimi J. Ullom have joined the firm’s Indianapolis office. Previously, Elizabeth and Jerimi worked together at a national healthcare-focused law firm, where they represented public and private clients in a myriad healthcare and finance matters for more than 15 years.
Elizabeth is a leading tax-exempt bond practitioner. Her practice focuses on debt financing for 501(c)(3) and governmental organizations, with particular experience in healthcare finance. She represents borrowers, issuers, underwriters and lenders across the United States and territories in tax-exempt and taxable financings. In addition to her transactional experience, Elizabeth advises her clients on ongoing tax, disclosure and obligated group compliance matters.
She is a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Bond Lawyers (NABL), a former editor of the Federal Taxation of Municipal Bonds Deskbook, and was the first chair of NABL’s government relations committee. She routinely serves as a presenter and panelist at NABL conferences.
Jerimi is a practical and creative finance lawyer focused on achieving his clients’ goals. Jerimi serves as bond and borrower’s counsel for healthcare, governmental and other nonprofit clients, and underwriter’s and lender’s counsel in financing transactions across the country. In the public arena, Jerimi serves as bond counsel to state agencies, cities, towns, counties and other governmental units in connection with the financing of capital projects. He is a national leader in the deployment of innovative real estate financing strategies for 501(c)(3) organizations, including the use of charitable foundation leases to deliver value to nonprofit organizations.
Jerimi also has significant experience in public-private partnership (P3) transactions, particularly those involving healthcare or nonprofit participants. In the private markets, Jerimi represents for-profit real estate developers in transactions that include public or economic development components. He was previously an attorney at Barnes & Thornburg from 2000-2008.
“Elizabeth and Jerimi’s legal prowess in the nonprofit healthcare financing arena is a unique value-add that will further equip our deep bench of attorneys to service the growing needs of our healthcare industry clients,” said John Kelly, chair of the firm’s Healthcare Department and Healthcare Industry Practice.
Richard Hall, chair of the firm’s Government Services and Finance Department, added, “Elizabeth and Jerimi’s experience and skills bolster our ability to assist clients across the country in highly complex tax-exempt and taxable public financings. We are thrilled to have them on board.”
“Elizabeth and Jerimi each have deep roots in the healthcare and public finance sectors as well as impressive experience in private markets,” said Brian Burdick, managing partner of the firm’s Indianapolis office. “They are a dynamic team that will add great value to our clients in Indianapolis and throughout the United States.”
Elizabeth earned her J.D. from Georgetown University and her B.A. from the University of Kentucky. Jerimi earned his J.D. from DePaul College of Law and his B.A. from DePauw University.
With more than 800 attorneys and other legal professionals, Barnes & Thornburg is one of the largest law firms in the country.
