PRINCETON, NJ (August 2026) — Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney continues to expand its Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights capabilities in New Jersey with the addition of Thomas Halm as a shareholder in the firm’s Princeton office. Halm represents banks, private lenders, debt funds, special servicers and other secured creditors in complex distressed commercial real estate matters nationwide, with a particular focus on New Jersey.

For more than 30 years, Halm has helped lenders navigate complex recovery challenges involving distressed commercial real estate. His practice focuses on developing practical, business-oriented strategies designed to protect collateral, preserve value and maximize recoveries throughout the lifecycle of a distressed loan.

“Tom deepens our bench, and his addition is an opportunity to continue to expand our practice in New Jersey,” said Tim Palmer, shareholder and Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights practice group leader. “We look forward to working with him to continue to enhance value for our clients.”

Halm advises clients at every stage of distressed commercial real estate matters, from pre-default planning and consensual workouts through receiverships, foreclosure, bankruptcy, loan sales and asset recovery. He is frequently called upon to develop creative strategies when traditional lender remedies are insufficient, with a focus on protecting collateral, preserving value and maximizing recoveries.

His experience includes complex commercial mortgage foreclosures, loan workouts and restructurings, receiverships, assignments of rents, deeds in lieu of foreclosure and distressed loan and asset sales. He also draws on substantial experience with commercial tort claims, regulatory issues and other alternative sources of recovery, allowing him to identify and pursue opportunities that may not be apparent through traditional foreclosure litigation.

In addition to representing lenders and secured creditors, Halm has extensive experience serving as counsel to court-appointed receivers and as a court-appointed receiver himself. In several of New Jersey’s significant securities fraud and Ponzi scheme matters, he has directed complex asset recovery efforts, conducted forensic investigations, pursued fraudulent transfer claims, administered claims processes and overseen the liquidation and distribution of assets for the benefit of creditors and investors.

Halm has also served as an expert witness in foreclosure malpractice defense matters, providing opinions concerning the standards and practices applicable to foreclosure litigation, and in real estate litigation matters.

“I’m excited to join Buchanan and begin collaborating with my colleagues,” said Halm. “Buchanan offers an impressive Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights practice, as well as a full-service, national platform that will be valuable to my clients. I look forward to bringing my experience in distressed commercial real estate and creditor recovery to the firm and working with colleagues across the platform to help clients navigate complex recovery challenges.”

Active in the legal community, Halm is a member of the Commercial Receivers Association, Turnaround Management Association – New Jersey Chapter, New Jersey State Bar Association and Ocean County Bar Association. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from Seton Hall University.
