Leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has strengthened its Asia restructuring practice with the appointment of Edward Middleton as Managing Director based in Hong Kong. This appointment demonstrates A&M’s commitment to bolstering the firm’s growing capabilities in Asia.

Mr. Middleton brings more than three decades of experience in restructuring, insolvency and liquidation, more than 20 years of which has been spent in Asia. He handled some of the highest profile insolvency and restructuring cases in Asia prior to joining A&M, including acting as the lead liquidator of Lehman Brothers Asia operations and as financial advisor to Vietnam Shipbuilding (‘Vinashin’).

Mr. Middleton has extensive expertise assisting corporates and creditors either as an insolvency office holder or as a financial advisor, working across multiple sectors and geographies. Previously, Mr. Middleton served as a Managing Director at Houlihan Lokey, where he was Co-Head of its Asian Financial Restructuring Group. This position followed a long tenure as a Partner of KPMG China, where he led its restructuring and insolvency business in China and the Asia-Pacific region for more than 10 years.

“Restructuring is in A&M’s roots as a firm known for its heritage of operational excellence. Against a backdrop of rising market volatility and financial pressure, business stakeholders are increasingly in need of advice and support to develop and execute restructuring solutions. I am delighted to have joined A&M’s Asia team at this time and am looking forward to helping the firm’s clients maximize value and drive change,” said Mr. Middleton.

“We are thrilled that Eddie has joined A&M at an important time in our expansion in Asia,” said Ron Thompson, Managing Director of A&M Asia and Head of Asia’s Restructuring Practice. “He is a recognized and respected market leader in this industry with extensive experience in advising on a wide range of restructuring and insolvency engagements. As businesses look to meet the challenges in the new normal, Eddie’s expertise will strengthen our ability to support our clients across Asia and provide solutions that address their needs.”

Mr. Middleton earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and politics from University of Manchester. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and of INSOL International, and is a member of the International Insolvency Institute.
